Revenue growth for social networking apps has outpaced that of any other category over the last year according to App Annie’s latest Index report.
The analyst said that in January 2013 the Social Networking category ranked third in monthly revenues, behind only Games and Productivity in the App Store and up 87% compared to January 2012. Interestingly, this leap in revenue was achieved without a similar rise in download volumes – downloads were up a far less stellar 30% year-over-year – indicating that the category is maturing and translating downloads into revenues.
“While revenue growth [in social networking apps] was seen across all major countries, Japan stood out with a tenfold increase in monthly revenue year-over-year, led by the runaway success of Line,” the analyst added.
“Meanwhile, growth opportunities exist in China for local publishers, as iOS Social Networking downloads recently have begun to ramp up there.”
