Portio ResearchGlobal revenue from in-app purchases will increase from $1.2bn at the end of 2012 to $26bn in 2017, according to Portio Research.

The company adds that average in-app purchase revenue will leap from $1.21 per person in 2012 to $6.46 per person in 2017, with this revenue making a “significant contribution” to non-voice revenues. Portio also predicts that apps will generate more than $60bn in total in 2017, with only 20% of this revenue coming from paid downloads, as opposed to 67% in 2012.

“Increasingly, apps will become free to download, but they will generate far greater revenue streams from advertising and in-app purchases,” the company says. “The most buoyant of these categories, is in-app purchases.”
